One of the things I enjoy seeing the most in weddings are the unique traditions each culture brings. Juliana and Andrew mentioned that they were going to do a Serbian tradition in which the groom would “buy” his bride….of course, we all knew no price tag could buy Juliana’s heart! 😜 But once upon a time, the bride was really purchased with large amounts of money or gold. In 1846, Serbian Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic issued an order: asking for and giving money and gold for the girl is abolished, as a custom that is contrary to the human dignity. Today, the custom known as “buying the bride” is now done very much in the spirit of tradition & good fun, and a way to calm the jitters! Hours before the ceremony the groom is supposed to go to the bride’s home and “barter for” or try to “buy” the bride. At this point the bride’s brother-in-law and the groom’s brother began negotiating the price of the bride. The negotiations were heated, with much waving around of money (including some good ol’ Canadian Tire money 😜), but alas they came to an agreement and Juliana’s transaction was finally settled! They then headed to tie the knot officially at one of Toronto’s beautiful unique venues — The Berkely Church — which maintains its heritage with stunning original 1871 architecture while offering an exciting backdrop for a wedding like this!
